St. Nicholas' Day is celebrated on December
6, --though it is most often observed on the eve of the
day, the 5th.
In most places in Europe St Nicholas actually arrives in
mid-November and the St Nicholas Season lasts until his feast
day. During that time he visits in schools, hospitals, and
homes. In the Netherlands it is during that time that children
receive treats in their shoes from an unseen Nicholas and it
is a big family party on the 5th (and he may come then as
well). He visits children at night,
leaving small gifts in their shoes.
